Although there has been some public demand for solar panels since the 1980s, they have remained too expensive to become widely used and remain a long way from achieving the critical mass required to become a successful consumer product. This has been mostly due to how much solar panels cost despite the multitude of government incentives such as tax breaks and feed in tariffs.
The most widely used type are PV Panels, the PV standing for Photo-Voltaic, these are often seen on the roofs of houses throughout Europe and Asia, usually providing some electricity towards heated water. An entirely sun powered house remains a long way in the future.
Solar power has always struggled to be taken seriously as a credible primary source of electricity due to two main factors. Firstly and most importantly is the cost, equipment remains prohibitively expensive making it very hard to see a return on any investment.
The second problem faced by those wishing to utilize the Sun's energy on any scale is that much of the world is covered in cloud for a great deal of the year. Although some panels can generate electricity with the sun's rays diffused through cloud, none have managed this to any serious degree.
Both of these problems are indicative of the underinvestment and development that solar power has suffered in comparison to other forms of renewable energy. Until major investors can be convinced of their potential, solar power seems doomed to be ghettoized.
Although the future is unknown, and the industry is continuing to develop with some promising progress being made, especially with regards to the concentration of photo-voltaic cells to increase power generation. As fossil fuels become more and more precious, the drive for renewable energy will surely advance technology much faster in the coming decades, but for the moment solar panels remain very much on the periphery.
